One morning, I let my two years old daughter to play with other kids. Afterwards, I brought her to the mall to stroll around. I notice that she suddenly has colds. So I bring her home. Checking on her temperature, it ranges from 37.8 – 38 degrees. So I gave her paracetamol.
On the second day, I noticed that she can’t drink her milk in the bottle. She keeps on crying and pointing inside her mouth, I’ve seen mouth ulcer and thinks that’s the reason why she’s having difficulty drinking her milk.
In the evening, I’ve noticed blisters on her foot and hands, so my first guess is that it’s some kind of a hand, foot and mouth disease.
Immediately the next day, we visited her doctor and I am right, she was diagnosed of having hand, foot and mouth disease. Her doctor explained that foot and mouth disease is a viral infection common in children below 5 years old. She probably was able to get this with other children who has this disease too. The usual symptoms are the following:
- colds with fever
- red spots / blisters
- mouth ulcers
Her doctor recommended Isoprinosine (Methisoprinol) – 7ml every 6 hours (dosage varies according to kid’s weight) – this is antiviral and immunomodulator medicine , paracetamol for the fever, and Daktarin oral gel for her mouth. She is advised not to mingle with other kids for a week because this disease is viral.
The following are some of the prevention to avoid Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease:
- Washing of hands with antibacterial soap and water
- Disinfecting your kids toys or dirty surfaces.
- Avoiding close contacts with other person infected with this disease.
Of course, I admit that it is still difficult to monitor 100% prevention with this disease, children will always be children. Loves to play around, loves to hold things that attract to them and other stuff…
But Mom’s out there, if your baby or kids got this disease, don’t panic and visit the doctor for advice.
