At the age of 2.5 years old, I see some speech problem with my daughter. She has delayed speech and can only talk very few words like: “Bye”, “Wow”, “Yehey”, “Hala” and counting numbers but she cannot speak most of the words I will tell. I compared her with other kids same her age that are able to speak combinations of words already. Base on this observation, I finally decided to seek for a professional advice.
- Early Intervention – means keep interacting with your child by talking to her. Telling her your chores, what you are doing by starting to combine 2-3 simple words like: “Drink Water”, “Mommy go”, “Bye-bye baby” – always includes action.
- Lessen Television (maximum 2 hours per day only), computer, cellphone games that don’t have physical/people interaction to improve child’s socialization. According to the doctor, it is advisable not to introduce television with child before the age of two.
- See an Occupational Therapist. This is a professional person trained to guide your child improve behavior, focus and teaches child’s skills to do things on their own.
- See a Speech Therapist to improve child’s communication skills.
My child’s doctor also gives a recommendation letter for the therapist. You need to bring this one, because the occupational therapist will ask for this during the first evaluation meeting.
I was able to schedule twice a week met-up with an occupational therapist (1 hour a day). During our session, the therapist guides me on how to train my child at home. It includes labeling and make a fun and cooperative rules for every person at home to only speak “One language”. Aside from focusing or behavioral problem, Language confusion might also be one of the barrier why the child doesn’t express herself. Example, your child is watching English cartoons at homes, and the people surrounding her is talking tagalog, visayan and etc. There’s a tendency that a child might be confused to what they should say… and there’s a lot more tips given according to there observations…
I see some improvements of my child like when I talk, she now has eye to eye contact, which means she’s now focus with what I am saying. I believe more improvements in her developmental growth is going to happen.
So Mom’s there, if you see any delayed in your child’s speech, growth or development, always seek for a professional advice. They are trained and equip with all the screening tools needed to help your child perform well on their age.
Feel free to leave a comment if you experienced the same problem with your child. It might help and enlighten some other Mom’s too.
My son at 3 years old has speech delay. He has problem in communicating and once we do not understand him, he would cry out loud and throw some things… I’m also thinking that maybe he just simply has delayed in talking.
But after reading this, I think I’d better seek professional advice now.
